There are interns, there are GA’s, and then there is the Senior Executive Deputy Graduate Assistant.

He or she started as a student intern. An undergrad who just kept showing up. They worked for pizza and t-shirts and, I'm telling you, they were more productive than some of our full-timers. But there was no money in the budget, so we promoted him or her to Senior Intern. And they were thrilled.

He or she came back for grad school - thank goodness - and assumed the new title of Senior Executive Graduate Assistant. Reporting straight to the Associate AD, this GA was in charge of the interns and ran five different programs. Yes, sometimes the Sr. Exec. GA missed a game or two, because of classes, but the S.E.G.A. was still terrific.

And we wanted to promote the S.E.G.A. but, due to budget issues, couldn't give them any more in stipend. So what do we do when we want to recognize a job well done but can't pay them anything else? We give them a new title!

And thus, the greatest GA ever, the Senior Executive Deputy Graduate Assistant, was born. Now reporting directly to the Senior Associate AD, the Senior Executive Deputy GA, or SEDGA, just gets stuff done. Every department needs a SEDGA. The SEDGA can be trusted to do anything and will still do anything, or at least find someone to do it.

This GA is in a class of their own.
